Seminar description

Christos Barbas (Ney, Piano), Dimitris Tasoudis (Drums) and Pavlos Spyropoulos (Contrabass) are three excellent musicians from Greece, with vast experience in traditional, classical and modal jazz music. They regularly give courses and perform together, collaborating with some of the top musicians of many genres: John Taylor, Erkan Ogur, Zohar Fresco, Ross Daly, Zezo Olimpio, Murat Aydemir, Stef Conner, Alex Harker, Paul Baxter, Efren Lopez, Sakis Papadimitriou amongst many others.

It is noteworthy that C. Barbas, P. Spyropoulos and D. Tasoudis are coming from a new generations of musicians which have mastered centuries‘ old traditions, (such as the Turkish Makam, Greek folk music) and also delve into practices as polyphony, harmony new orchestrations, working intensively with improvisation and composition.

Modality (modal musics use the tool of the mode, as opposed to classical tonic music which uses functional harmony) is a strong asset in their music, as is the tendency to investigate the minute details sound, and the emergence of melodies through the act of careful listening. In their performances elements from modal jazz can be interweaved with contemporary and classical ideas, always allowing ample space for improvisation as well as to highlight the nature of each instrument.

In their two day workshop (2 sessions x 6hrs) they will share their experience in a vast area of musical matters, including modality, ornamentation, instrument technique, phrasing, improvisation, aesthetics, verbal vs non-verbal learning, composition a.o.

> The workshop is open to all participants, including all instruments or singers.

> Interested drummers are encouraged to bring their own snare drum
with its base!
